Story of this Masterpiece

Created in 1890.

This colorful Tricycle advertisement from 1890 doesn't only offer a glimpse at the history of the cycling sport but also plays a part in a compelling story about entrepreneurship!

Adolphe Clément, born in France, decided to become a bicycle manufacturer at a very young age. He built his first wooden bicycle when he was only seventeen. Him finishing 6th place in a bicycle brought his name into the newspapers one year later. At the young age of twenty-one he opened up his first bicycle repair shop. He was so determined that he moved to Marseille shortly after to study how to manufacture steel tubes for bicycles and ultimately opened up his own cycle manufacturing business in Paris in 1878. All the while still competing in cycle races. Two years later he had a whopping 150 employees. In 1890 Clément finally became the leading cycle brand in the country.

After a cooperation with Dunlop in 1896, his company evolved to become a French automobile manufacturer by the name of Clément & Cie.

The vintage motif showing a young man wearing a black outfit with red gauntlets and amazing mustache, ready to hit the pedals on his racing-tricycle, illustrates the determination it takes to win every race. The colors of this poster consisting of red, black and beige create a very dynamic mood that is partially eased off by the rare faded background of several shades of blue. Hang this iconic vintage-advertisement on your wall to celebrate the culture of cycling or let the entrepreneurial story behind it inspire you on your own journey.
