Story of this Masterpiece

This poster celebrates an extraordinary human who was different at first glance but was beloved by his community, a humble and kind character. Franz Winkelmeier made the best of his short life and was dearly missed. This poster hence is a symbol to remind you that you might feel different, might feel like you don’t fit in, but can achieve everything if you try.

Franz Winkelmeier lived long ago when there was a time without television and internet. Circuses travelled the country to entertain people and broaden their horizons. At the end of the 19th century exotic animals, skillful artistes and amusing clowns were part of the circus gala. Besides that, so-called “freaks” were an essential part of the program. Not until the 1920s the circus as form of entertainment declined in popularity due to upcoming competition such as amusement parks, movie houses, burlesque tours and the rise of the radio. With the decline of circus audiences, freakshows also lost in popularity.

Franz Winkelmeier did not experience that. The by his own account tallest man of his time died aged 27 in 1887, during the glory days of displayed freaks. Cause of death was not his extraordinary height of (allegedly) 2,58 meters (8” 9’), although even back then he knew about the health risks of his physique. Despite his young age he did not hesitate to talk about his own death and was described as a lovable character all in all. Winkelmeiers kind nature even opened the Royal Household’s doors for him. In 1887 he was introduced to Queen Victoria.
