Story of this Masterpiece

A box fight man versus kangaroo was a real sport in the 19th century. It originated – of course – in Australia but quickly spread to the United States and Europe. In the wild, male kangaroos fight against each other as part of the mating ritual. At some point some Aussie thought to himself: “Let’s put gloves on this bad boy and fight against him.”

Today the sport is considered cruel and harmful to the animals, but because of it’s raw “man vs. nature” touch it nonetheless provides a basis for contemporary pop cultural references like Kangaroo Jack, Roger from the videogame Tekken and even Australia’s official sports flag.

This artistic masterpiece by German poster artist Adolph Friedländer (* 1851; † 1904) from the 1890s shows a classic gentleman mid-fight with a kangaroo. His fashionable clothes and well-groomed appearance stand in contrast to the sport, that gets you dirty. This contrast makes this advertisement an exceptionally aesthetic and cool design, that adorns every man cave.

Adolph Friedländer was one of the most famous poster artists in Germany. His production company created over 9000 designs in his lifetime, mainly for circuses, magicians and other shows.
