Story of this Masterpiece by Beggarstaffs

Created in 1894.

The Beggarstaffs was a collective of artists consisting of Sir William Newzam Prior Nicholson and James Ferrier Pryde. While the two are repeatedly referred to as Beggarstaff Brothers, the two are not related, but rather in an in-law relationship.

The commissional work for Kassama Corn Flour was the first poster of the Beggarstaffs to be reproduced as a lithograph. Although being mere contractors they insisted on keeping complete artistic control over the design. Therefore, the advertised product corn flour is not depicted on the poster. The artists rather focused on a girl carrying a grocery basket, that in her innocence is a testimonial for the pure flour.

The Beggastaff’s work often features a single dramatic image composed of areas of flat colour. This design is no exception, the bright background unifies the image by being continued in the basket and the girl’s hair.
