Nothing in La Femme au Perroquet gives a clou that this masterpiece dates to 1898. A young fashionable woman with her parrot and an orange in her hand dreamily stares into the sky. She could’ve lived in the 1960s or even in 2020, but this lithograph was part of L’Estampe Moderne, an art collection from the late 19th hundred.
L’Estampe Moderne was issued by Imprimerie Champenois of Paris. They are best known for their work with Art Nouveau luminaries like Alphonse Mucha, who were also published in L’Estampe Moderne.
In contrast to other masterpieces from the time, this work by German artist Angelo Jank has no apparent characteristics of Art Nouveau. By that Jank remains true to this style which was more influenced by impressionists like Monet than contemporary artists.
